• Yes, this card started out vertically.  When it just wasn't saying "mama" to me, I flipped it 90 degrees. Ahhhh.  Much better.
• The Corner Rounder Punch adds a subtle but pretty finish.
• Gold heat embossing and Stampin' Up! Brushed Gold Card Stock provide a dash of splash to this neutral palette.  The butterfly (produced by the Beautiful Wings Embosslit Die, a Stampin' Up! exclusive) is gorgeous in gold.
• A Japanese-inspired rug from West Elm spurred my color palette and design.

Pals Paper Arts (PPA57) Sketch

The Pals Paper Arts Design Team believes that a good sketch, like a pattern for fashion, is the foundation of balance and style.  This week's PPA challenge offers a lovely sketch by Design Team member Margaret Moody.  Check out the PPA Design Team samples and challenge your paper crafting skills using this sketch.

 

IMPORTANT UPDATE:  There's no requirement to upload more than one card for the challenge!  Go as clean and simple or as jazzed up as you want!

STAMPIN' PRETTY TIPS:

• This design is all about "the snips."  My Stampin' Up! Paper Snips navigated cleanly around the lines of the flowers from Growing Green.  To maintain better control, move the card stock while cutting, not the scissors.
• A couple flowers popped up on Stampin' Dimensionals give a 3-D garden effect.
• NEW PRODUCT ALERT!  You can finally order the Decorative Label Extra Large Punch on 9/1, with the launch of the Stampin' Up! Holiday Mini Catalog.  Try punching the sentiment off center and adding a row of brads or punches for a new look.
• The fabric from this gorgeous bedding (Garnet Hill) caught my attention and inspired me to use a colorful palette.

Have a Seat for Simple Saturday

There's supposed to be a pun in this sentiment.  Fun, yes?  For today's Simple Saturday card, I used a stamp set that I coveted from the first time I saw it--Have a Seat.  I especially like the way they chairs look lined up in a trio.  Here's another way (from a previous post) to use a single chair from Have a Seat.

STAMPIN' PRETTY TIP:  With the clear-mount version of Have a Seat I was able to line them up, get the spacing right, dip in More Mustard ink and be done in a flash.

Here's the result of stamping the chairs all at once and no Stamp-a-ma-jig required :)

STAMPIN' PRETTY TIP:  Likewise, with the Sweet Shoppe Alphabet Lower (lower case), I was able to build the word "cherish" with my clear-mount version--all but the second "h."  The set includes one stamp of each letter in the alphabet.  I added the second "h" after stamping the first six letters in a row.  Still very easy to "tack on" the "h" with clear-mount.  The font is very modern and clean.

Both Have A Seat and Sweet Shoppe Alphabet are available in clear-mount and wood-mount so everyone can get their preference.

STAMPIN' PRETTY TIP:  I have said it before and I'll say it again.  The new Stampin' Up! Color Coach is a fantastic way to get the creative juices flowing.  It offers nice-sized swatches of every Stampin' Up! Color plus suggested color combinations on the back.  Not Quite Navy, Cajun Craze and More Mustard were ready to go for a Simple Saturday card.

It's time for another Pals Paper Arts Challenge (PPA47).  This week's theme is summer.  Frankly, I had to look up hydrangeas to confirm that they bloom in summer . . . but was thrilled to learn that this lovely hydrangea card would qualify.

• Stamping Versamark or ink on matching cardstock creates a soft and pretty "original" designer paper.  The butterfly is from the Stampin' Up! Dreams du Jour set.
• For a more realistic garden, I stamped off some of the blooms so they would be lighter.
• Tags on cards are hot, hot, hot!  You can use the Small Oval Punch to create a quick, little cutie.
• No pounding allowed!  Set an eyelet quietly with a handy Crop-A-Dile.

The Milk of Human Kindness

From Shakespeare's Macbeth, 1605:

"Yet doe I feare thy Nature, It is too full o' th' Milke of humane kindnesse."

As some of you have already learned, my beloved sister-in-law, Karol Harris, lost her battle with breast cancer last week.  You may recall our special "Think Pink" Pals Paper Arts theme last October--a tribute to both Karol's fight and so many who have been affected by this disease.

It's been a sad week, but seeing family and friends when we returned to Madison for the funeral was very healing.  Karol was the epitome of  the "milk of human kindness" . . . evidenced by the enormous turnout of family, friends and co-workers at her funeral service.  Her intelligence, wit and generosity are a model for all and will be greatly missed.  

Karol's daughter (my niece, Kris Kilcoyne, Kween Bee Kreations) and I have received an outpouring of condolences and kindness from fellow stampers. I'm so very grateful.  I wanted to share the beautiful handmade cards I have received.   It's times like this that we can all see how powerful our passion for stamping and paper crafting can be.

STAMPIN' PRETTY TIPS:

• Are these stamp images from Stampin' Up!?  Not yet but they will be.  This is an early sneak peek of "Elements of Style" from the Summer Mini Catalog (available May 1).
• The floral image really grooves when embossed in white.
• Like this style but can't wait for the set?  Try any of Stampin' Up!'s background stamps or any large stamp image as an alternative.
• To create the three panels, stamp first on card stock in a width that's easily divided by three.
• Length can be whatever you need.  For this card, each width is 1 1/8" wide.  My original image was stamped on 3 3/8" wide card stock, then divided.  Make sense?

PPA27: Snowflakes

Hmmm, "snowflakes" seemed like a logical  theme choice when the Pals Paper Arts design team  put together the calendar for 2010 . . . however, I'm simply tuckered out on all things winter right now--even packed up my fall and holiday stamps.  Fortunately, I dug up my Serene Snowflakes stamp set (retired Holiday Mini) and used it in a not so "wintery" way.  Click here to play PPA27.

This card was sent to cowboy, Poly Mendoza, who broke his leg during a rodeo performance for Stampin' Up! demonstrators at Leadership in Phoenix, earlier this month.  If there's one thing Stampin' Up! demonstrators know how to do, it's share their well wishes through cards.  I'm sure Poly has received plenty of "fan" mail and is "knitting" nicely.

STAMPIN' PRETTY TIPS:

• Don't have Serene Snowflakes?  Consider Fine Flourish, a new single stamp in the Occasions Mini Catalog (p. 42 and on the right).  It's gawjus!
• Stampin' Up! To The Nines Specialty Designer Series Paper is one of my favorites for masculine cards.  The patterns remind me of men's ties.  To see more of my masculine card samples, CLICK HERE.
• To add a little "wow" to a sentiment, try layering shapes.  I cropped "get well wishes" with the Small Oval Punch and layered it over a Modern Label Punch of Sage Shadow card stock.
• Those little epoxy brads are "bling extraordinaire!"  They are only available in the Stampin' Up! Occasions Mini Catalog (along with Pretty in Pink and Real Red epoxy brads, sold separately).

Going, Going . . . .

With the excitement of the impending release of the Stampin' Up! Occasions Mini and Sale-A-Bration Promotion (both start Tuesday, Jan. 5--see them now on my right side bar), there's a bittersweet reality that many fabulous stamps will be retiring on Jan. 4.  Today, I used one of my favorite stamp sets, Font of You.  It's currently on the dormant list and headed for retirement.

STAMPIN' PRETTY TIPS:

• Make your stamping time more efficient.  I used this week's Splitcoast Sketch Challenge (SC261, below) as a quick starting point to create this sympathy card.
• Layer, baby, layer.  Punch and layer your way to a stunning sentiment.  I used the Stampin' Up! Word Window, Large Oval and Designer Label Punches to juice up my tiny text.
• The Font of You vase was stamped a second time on Dusty Durango.  Paper snipping and Stampin' Dimensionals give it a lovely lift!  Stampin' Up! Paper Snips cleanly cut around little details.
• The flower blooms were dolled up with a Dusty Durango Stampin' Up! Marker.  So easy!

Daisy Wellness Wishes

I hope to brighten an ill aunt's day with these die cut daisies in rich fall colors.   If you are a regular reader, you know how much I love fashion and home décor magazines for inspiration.  The patterned chair (below) from a Crate and Barrel catalog got the creative juices flowing.

STAMPIN' PRETTY TIPS:

• The card base is 4 1/8" x 5 3/8, scored on the top.  It's slightly smaller than a standard A2 (4 1/4" x 5 1/2") card so that I could allow the daisies to "overflow" on the sides but still fit in an A2 sized envelope.
• Layering die-cut shapes creates a quick and colorful background.
• I use Stampin' Dimensionals on almost every card.  3D can take a simple card to wow.
• A single rounded corner and Jumbo Brads make an elegant statement on on the sentiment.

Autumn in Pendant Park

Sympathy and get well cards can be a challenge to create.  I often worry they will be too bold, bright or feminine.  However, offering hope shouldn't be limited to neutrals and formal.  Click here for more sympathy and get well card samples.

I used Autumn Meadows Designer Paper (available Sept. 1 in the Holiday Mini Catalog) to create a soft but colorful card.  Autumn Meadows colors include Chocolate Chip, Really Rust, More Mustard, Taken with Teal and Very Vanilla.  Gorgeous colors to have handy as we head into fall.

STAMPIN' PRETTY TIPS:

• The Pendant Park stamp was first inked in Taken with Teal.  I used Sponge Daubers dipped in Chocolate Chip to apply a contrast around the edges, directly to the rubber before stamping.
• Background stamps like Trés Chic are loaded with sentiments.  Crop one out and let it stand on it's own as I did with "hope."
• Where to place your buttons?  I wiggle them around on top of my card until they say "mama"  (translation: they look good to me).  They are attached with Mini Glue Dots (103683).

Sneak Peek Night and Day DP

The Night and Day Specialty Paper in the Stamipin' Up! Holiday Mini Catalog is irresistible.  Black and white patterns coordinate with themes from Halloween to weddings.  There are even two 12 x 12 black polka dot window sheets.  I chose two elegant Night and Day samples for today's card.

The customer sales period for the Mini begins September 1.  However, I'm here to give you plenty of sneak peeks in the meantime to help you prepare your wish list in advance.

• Using Trendy Trees stamp set and a Stamp-a-ma-jig, I created my black and red tree (I'm not one to conform to "green-only" leaves).
• The image is layered on Basic Black and Real Red card stock.
• A snippet of Red Gingham Ribbon is a splendid accent.
• I stamped the "sorry" sentiment from Teeny Tiny Wishes (Jet Black Stazon ink on Real Red card stock).
• The Modern Label Punch gives the sentiment a delightful new shape and two Pretties Halfback Pearls garnish the sides.  TIP:  Stampin' Up! Mini Glue Dots (103683) hold the pearls firmly in place.
• Two patterns from Night and Day Specialty Paper layer over Real Red, in accordance with this week's Splitcoast Sketch Challenge SC241.
• The Whisper White card base is 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" and scored on the side.

Mojo 92 Razzleberry Lemonade

Welcome to another round of Mojo Madness.  As one of the lucky ones who gets their mojo-licious sketch (Mojo Monday 92) to design in advance, I'm ready to strut my stuff, which includes more Sneak Peeks from the new Stampin' Up! 2009-2010 Idea Book and Catalog, available July 1.

• I began by stamping a modern stem from the new Autumn Days stamp set (available July 1) in Rich Razzleberry on Razzleberry Lemonade Designer Series Paper (also new).  TIP:  Don't forget that stamping on designer paper can be a beautiful option.
• The image panel was matted on Rich Razzleberry Textured card stock and a strip of the same, shaped with a Scallop Edge Punch, dresses up the left side.
• After punching out a Scalloped Square in Rich Razzleberry Textured card stock, I added a Clear Button.  TIP:  Make instant coordinating "thread" by cutting a thin sliver of card stock (Pumpkin Pie used here) and carefully tying it in the button holes.
• A Mini Glue Dot keeps the button in place, hidden below the knot.  Stampin' Dimensionals keep the entire element pumped up.
• I used Rich Razzleberry Textured card stock to create the 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" card base.  Gorgeous.  Note: This glorious color may finally make you stop mourning over the loss Purely Pomegranate from a couple seasons ago!
• Pumpkin Pie Textured card stock gets a little detailing using a Paper Piercer and Template.  It's layered along with another pattern from Razzleberry Lemonade Designer Series Paper over the card base.
• TIP:  Pretty ribbon is a splendid way to blend a seam between two different papers.  I used Rich Razzleberry 1/2" Polka Dot Grosgrain Ribbon (available July 1) to do the job.  FYI:  I got this adorable polka dot ribbon in every one of the new In Colors.  Always chic!
• The sentiment is from another new stamp set, Teeny Tiny Wishes.  It will definitely become my latest Little Black Dress of sentiments.  With 24 mini holiday and occasions stamps (all different fonts:  très cool), these little guys will be a powerhouse for card making.  They fit within the parameters of many of Stampin' Up!'s punches (including the Small Oval Punch used here), label holders or simply hold their own layered directly to designer paper or card stock.
• The oval sentiment is adhered with a couple Stampin' Dimensionals to Rich Razzleberry shaped with the new Modern Label Punch (one of the "it" products from the new catalog, in my opinion).
• Two Circle Rhinestone brads from the Fire collection doll up the sides of the sentiment.
• Stampin' Dimensionals were used to attach the sentiment to the card.
