Envelope Envy Video Part One

Ready for my quick and easy tips on giving your envelopes polish?  Today kicks off part one of three video tutorials on simple ways to jazz up your envelopes for a coordinated look with your hand crafted cards. 

UPDATE:  I suggest a strong adhesive to seal the envelope (since the original envelope flap adhesive gets covered).  Stampin' Up! 2-Way Glue should do the trick and is quick and easy to use--just swipe along the top of the flap.  When sealing the envelope, be sure to adhere immediately (while glue is blue) and hold for a few seconds--M

This masculine birthday card takes shape in minutes using my hobby blade and cutting mat.  Very retro and clean.  My inspiration comes from the bold orange and stainless kitchen below, part of a monochromatic color challenge at Kween Bee Kreations.

Mojo Monday127: Easel

Isn't this easel fun?  For this week's Mojo Monday sketch challenge  (MOJO127), I created an easel card that will help celebrate my teenage nephew's 14th birthday.  I think it has enough birthday whimsy without being too young for him.  The bold colors bring out the Sweet Pea Designer Series Paper (Occasions Mini Catalog) and masculine, geometric shapes.  Click and scroll for more of my masculine card ideas.

STAMPIN' PRETTY TIPS:

• The easel portion of this 4 1/4" x 4 1/4" card (closed) is whipped up in minutes.  Click here for the Splitcoaststampers Easel Card Tutorial and video I relied on.
• A punched star, brad and Pumpkin Pie strip are the "kickstand" when the card is set up.
• Line up your brads with precision.  I used Stampin' Up!'s Paper-Piercing Tool and Piercing Mat (included in the Mat Pack) to help these Vintage Brads become a happy "chorus line."
• Mini Glue Dots adhere the large button with superhero strength.  For a polished touch, I "threaded" a skinny piece of Chocolate Chip card stock through the button holes.
• Stampin' Up!'s Stampin' Write Markers were used to color the sentiment with three different colors.  I love the results.

Simple Saturday Star Card

See the sweet windows on the card?  Stampin' Up!'s Movers and Shapers Bigz XL Die is your fast track to quick and classy cards.  Click here for my Movers & Shapers 101 Video Tutorial.

The XL Movers & Shapers Bigz Die comes packaged with the magnetic Curly Label Die (114506).  In addition, Stampin' Up! offers a set of four punch windows (115953, Scallop Oval, Modern Label, Heart and Star).  Each individual piece is magnetic, movable and used in conjunction with the Bigz Die.  For example, I could move the star die anywhere within the area above.  I combined the star and modern label for today's card.

The very essence of quick . . . not only do you get fun shapes, the bigz die cuts and scores (yep, scores) a perfect 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" (A2) card.  Trés cool!  

In a single trip thru the Big Shot Die-Cut Machine, you have the card above.

The star and modern label window openings coordinate with the Stampin' Up! Large Star (110710) and Modern Label (116630) Punches.  The punch sizes are a touch smaller so they can peek through the window.

The interior is quite splashy with this mix of Rich Razzleberry and Dusty Durango.

Let's Step It Up but keep the added work to a minimum.  Slivers of Rich Razzleberry card stock are paper pierced and contribute as stripes.  Three Pewter Brads (109109, Vintage Brads) jazz up the side.

Brown parcel paper is officially my only wrapping paper in the house.  It looks gorgeous stamped or stenciled.  However, I'm such a punch maven.  I popped out large and small stars to give it a trendy, masculine finish for my husband, Scott's, birthday.

PPA27: Snowflakes

Hmmm, "snowflakes" seemed like a logical  theme choice when the Pals Paper Arts design team  put together the calendar for 2010 . . . however, I'm simply tuckered out on all things winter right now--even packed up my fall and holiday stamps.  Fortunately, I dug up my Serene Snowflakes stamp set (retired Holiday Mini) and used it in a not so "wintery" way.  Click here to play PPA27.

This card was sent to cowboy, Poly Mendoza, who broke his leg during a rodeo performance for Stampin' Up! demonstrators at Leadership in Phoenix, earlier this month.  If there's one thing Stampin' Up! demonstrators know how to do, it's share their well wishes through cards.  I'm sure Poly has received plenty of "fan" mail and is "knitting" nicely.

Pals Paper Arts Tin

Designing for a teenage boy is at the top of my list of difficult projects.  I don't want the result to be too young, too old or too feminine.  This week's Pals Paper Arts Challenge is Anything But a Card (PPA26).  I thought it was ideal timing to jazz up a Silver Skinny Tin for a teenage boy who is recovering from a nasty illness and hospitalization.  A gift card is tucked inside, held firmly in place with Mini Glue Dots.

STAMPIN' PRETTY TIPS:

• Free inspiration is everywhere.  I used a page from a CB2 home furnishings catalog for my color palette.
• Alphabet Simple Bigz Dies (a Stampin' Up! exclusive)  crop classic lower case letters in chipboard and textured Old Olive card stock. They layer for a perfect fit.
• The circle (also from Alphabet Simple) converted the "a" to the chipboard "@" sign.  A very hip touch suggested by my daughter Caroline.  At 16, she's the expert on "hip".
• The remaining Old Olive circle from the ring around the "a" is used to back the sentiment. 
• I think the Whimsical Words Sale-A-Bration stamp set (available free with a $50 product order), offers a "spot on" sentiment for this occasion.
• A Real Red Button from Playground Designer Buttons provides a subtle pop of color.  I LIKE the fact that it doesn't match the rest of the project. 
• Don't recognize the button?  Shhhhh, it's flipped over.  He'll never know there's a flower on the other side.

Mojo Monday Goes Masculine

Thanks, Julee T, for another fabulous Mojo Monday sketch (MOJO116).  I needed a birthday card for my niece's husband.  I thought these colors (Soft Suede, Bermuda Bay, Pumpkin Pie) were simply splashy for a festive, masculine card.  Click here to see more of my masculine card samples.

STAMPIN' PRETTY TIPS:

• A Circle Scissor Plus and Glass Mat are the stars of the show today.  I was able to create the exact sized circles and mats I wanted.  Click for my tips on using the Circle Scissor Plus.
• Stampin' Up! Markers were used directly to the rubber for the sentiment (the paintbrush end).  Alternating colors allows you to create a multi-color single stamp (Everything Nice stamp set).
• Substituting the Large Star and Star Punch for the bow gives the sketch a "manly" edge.
• A trio of Silver Brads top and bottom offer a crisp accent.
• I again applied Stampin' Up! Markers directly to the rubber of the hat stamp (Party Hearty stamp set) for a jazzed up envelope flap.

I needed a masculine card for my brother-in-law and was inspired by the design in a home interiors catalog (below).  It immediately triggered images of Circle Circus, the foundation (along with Stampin' Up!'s Circle Punches) for the card. Trendy Trees Mojo Monday 105

Welcome to this week's Mojo Monday sketch challenge (MOJO105).  It feels good to be back home with my family again.  However, my long weekend in St. George as part of the Stampin' Up! Founder's Circle Retreat was fabulous, inspiring and fun.  We got the thumbs up to share some early sneak peeks from the next Occasions Mini Catalog.  Stay tuned!

STAMPIN' PRETTY TIPS:

• 

  Using the Stampin' Up! In Color Markers, I applied Rich Razzleberry, Dusty Durango and Soft Suede directly to the rubber of the tree leaves.  Be sure to "huff" a few times on the inked rubber to moisten before stamping.
• To layer the leaves precisely over the tree trunk, a Stamp-a-ma-jig is your BFF (best friend forever).
• A 1" Circle Punch was a life saver in creating the big scallop border.  I used the spiral "leaves" from the Trendy Trees stamp set before punching.
• Experiment with layering punches to produce unique effects.  I adore the Word Window Punch layered over the Modern Label Punch.  I swooped this clever idea from my Stampin' Pretty Pal, Melissa Young.
• I used the Photo Corners Punch to pop out the top left corner element.  It's perfect for creating a quick right angle.
• Think you can't use ribbon on a masculine card?  Sure you can.  Just keep it clean.  It dresses up a card in the way a tie dresses up a suit.  Check out more of my  masculine card samples.

Mojo Monday 99

Welcome to another round of Mojo Monday (MOJO99).  I'm a lucky stamper to be able to see Julee Tilman's mojo-licious sketches in advance.  Better yet, I can design my own version and share with you every Monday morning at 7:00 a.m. CST.  Click here and scroll to see past Mojo sketches.

This card is for my nephew's "30-something" birthday.  It incorporates three coordinating patterns from the Stampin' Up! Autumn Traditions Designer Series Paper.  The colors (Elegant Eggplant, Soft Suede, Ruby Red, More Mustard, Always Artichoke) and style are clean and masculine. Textured card stock gives the card a rich texture.  Click here for more masculine samples.

• This exquisite sketch is multi-layered, I'll start at the top layer and work my way to the bottom. 
• The sentiment, from Upsy Daisy, is inked in Always Artichoke and stamped on Very Vanilla.
• I used Stampin' Up!'s Paper Piercer and Template to decorate the border.
• The sentiment is adhered with Stampin' Dimensionals on a rectangle of Ruby Red Textured card stock.
• I added three Always Artichoke Brads.  TIP:  The Paper Piercer and Template come in handy for creating perfectly aligned holes for your brads.
• A More Mustard Autumn Traditions pattern arrives next.  I cropped Ruby Red Textured card stock with a Round Tab Punch and adhered it to the top.
• For a special touch, I snipped out the leaf from the Autumn Traditions paper and adhered it with a Stampin' Dimensional to the tab.  TIP:  Stampin' Up!'s Paper Snips (103579) are divine for doing detailed cutting.
• A strip of Always Artichoke Textured card stock is tucked behind. 
• Per the Mojo sketch, I added Autumn Traditions over Elegant Eggplant on the right and Elegant Eggplant Textured card stock over Always Artichoke Textured card stock on the left.
• The 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" Elegant Eggplant Textured card base was scored on the side.  It's topped with a handsome stripe from Autumn Traditions.

Sneak Peek: Autumn Days

I needed one last (last minute?) Father's Day card and this Pheasant from Autumn Days and three new In Colors (Dusty Durango, Soft Suede and Bermuda Bay) were just the ticket.  These items will be available with the arrival of the new Stampin' Up! 2009-2010 Idea Book and Catalog on July 1.

• The pheasant was inked in Soft Suede and stamped on Very Vanilla.
• I gave it a new dimension by snipping it out and adhering it with Stampin' Dimensionals to a Bermuda Bay rectangle of textured card stock (matted on Soft Suede).
• Perpendicular, I added another rectangle of Dusty Durango Textured card stock, also matted on Soft Suede.
• Three Very Vanilla Brads (Stampin' Up! Styled Vanilla Hodgepodge Hardware) complement the colorful panels. TIP:   I used a Paper Piercer and Template to measure and space the holes for the brads.  Neat and tidy that way :)
• The Very Vanilla panel was textured with a très cool Texturz Plate and my Big Shot.
• The Very Vanilla card base is 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" and scored on the top.
• Dusty Durango card stock was cut 1/4" smaller than the card base and layered on top.
• The sentiment is from Celebrate Everything.  It's inked and stamped on matching Soft Suede card stock.
• The Small Oval Punch reshapes the sentiment to fit below the Hodgepodge Vanilla Label Holder and Vanilla coordinating brads.
• TIP:  I tucked a couple Stampin' Dimensionals below the sentiment to keep it in place while attaching the label holder.  This helps it fill out the holder, too.
• TIP:  The label holder and brads were attached to the Dusty Durango card stock before adhering to the card base.  This way the brad "legs" are buried. 
• My layout was inspired by this week's Splitcoast Sketch Challenge, SC233.  Find all my favorite challenges linked on my left side bar.

Father's Day Squared

I think I'm in a pretty small camp of stampers who actually enjoy the challenge of making a masculine card.  A simple background of punched squares, a bold sentiment and an accent of silver brads presents a crisp geometry, perfect for my husband this Father's Day!

• The cool block sentiment is from All Holidays, a versatile occasions stamp set.  I inked it with Jet Black Stazon and stamped on Very Vanilla.  
• TIP:  Want your ink to really grab on solid stamps?  I use one of Stampin' Up!'s Sanding Blocks to gently "rough up" the solid area of the rubber.  Clean off any residue and be ready experience a nice improvement when you stamp.
• The sentiment is adhered with Stampin' Dimensionals to Basic Gray card stock (one of my faves) and followed by Basic Black.
•  Using a Stampin' Up! 1 1/4" Square Punch, I zipped out a modern mosaic in Basic Gray and Very Vanilla.  
• TIP:  My inspiration often comes from fashion catalogs.  A Garnet Hill catalog arrived today and I was immediately inspired by the colors and floor pattern of one of the ads (photo below).
• Each square was adhered to a 4 1/4" by 5 1/2" card base in Basic Black.
• Three Silver Brads jazz up the corner.  TIP:  I like to keep embellishments to a minimum on masculine cards.

Memorial Day: Operation Gratitude

 

The challenge from my "Stampin' Pretty Pals" downline this week (suggested by Pal Liz Hughes) was to combine this Splitcoast Stampers sketch with a Memorial Day theme. 

This card is headed for Operation Gratitude, military service members stationed overseas.  It's not too late if you would like to participate.  Sending cards from your "stash" is appreciated so that soldiers can send them to their families for birthdays, thanks yous and more.

Here are guidelines to follow when sending cards to our troops:

• any size card is acceptable
• the cards cannot have any glitter on them
• no candy or food items can be included or attached to the card
• keep the message positive and stay away from politcal comments
• do not seal the envelope that will be used to send the card to the military member; all cards are subject to screening and review
• include your name, address and e-mail if you'd like to receive a reply back
• it's nice to include another card(s) that they can send back to their family and loved ones (cards are difficult for our military serving in combat areas to purchase).  I'm sending a dozen :)
• If you are sending more than one card, place all of your cards in a Ziploc bag with post-it notes on the cards that are to be sent for the service member to mail back.

This 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" card was easy to produce using my Stampin' Up! Star Punches!  Riding Hood Red and Whisper White were layered over the center rectangle of Night of Navy.  It reminded me of a flag.  The star brads from Styled Silver Hodgepodge Hardware were a snappy, patriotic touch.

Stampin' Up! for Grandpa

As soon as I saw Kraft and Basic Black in the Urban Oasis Designer Series Paper (along with Kiwi Kiss and Baja Breeze), I knew I wanted it.  The patterns are modern and versatile--perfect for today's card for my father-in-law's birthday.  Beate's Weekend Sketch Challenge 78, hosted by Sharon Harnist,  prompted the layout.

• I stamped the sentiment from Full of Life (one of my favorites) in Basic Black on Kraft card stock.  TIP:  Did you know there are dormant stamps available to order from Stampin' Up! not in the catalog?  Click here to download the Stampin' Up! dormant stamp list.
• Using a Paper Piercer and Template, I added a fun little border.
• A Crop-A-Dile was my BFF (best friend forever) for incorporating these Jumbo Pewter Eyelets quietly and quickly.  TIP:  A touch of metal always works on a masculine card.
• A Photo Corners Punch shaped up the corner accent using Urban Oasis Designer Series Paper.  It's propped up on "customized" Stampin' Dimensionals.  TIP:  Stampin' Dimensionals aren't destined to be hexagons for life . . . cut them to fit skinnier shapes.
• To make "happy" even happier, I stamped the sentiment a second time, Basic Black Ink on Kiwi Kiss.  It's snipped and attached with a sliver of dimensionals.  TIP:  I generally advocate Jet Black Stazon for a darker, crisper black image.  However, Stampin' Up!'s Basic Black is softer and was a better match with the soft black of the Urban Oasis paper.
• I adhered the sentiment with Stampin' Dimensionals to Baja Breeze card stock.
• A 1 3/4" Circle was punched from the Kiwi Kiss houndstooth pattern (Urban Oasis Designer Series) and tucked in between the sentiment and the colorful polka dot and snappy black pattern (also Urban Oasis).
• A 4" x 5 1/4" panel of Baja Breeze is layered over a Kraft card stock base (4 1/4" x 5 1/4").

Very Versatile Masculine Card

What's the secret to a masculine card?  Classy and clean.  Minimal embellishments.  Using the new Very Versatile stamp set from Stampin' Up!'s Occasions Mini Catalog, you can assemble a classy and clean card for many occasions.

This card is intended to cheer up a my niece's dad, who is recovering from a motorcycle accident.  He will heal but it's going to require patience.  I figured he could use a "wish-come-true" sentiment.  Here's a link to my gallery of masculine card ideas!

• The stem from Very Versatile (Occasions Mini) was inked in Chocolate Chip and stamped on Very Vanilla card stock  (3 5/8" x 2 1/8").
• It's layered on Sage Shadow  (3 3/4" x 2 1/4") followed by Chocolate Chip (4" x 2 1/2").
• The Sage Shadow Textured card stock panel measures 4" x 2 1/2".  I added three of Stampin' Up!'s Chocolate Chip 5/16" Jumbo Brads.  TIP:  I haven't said this for ages.  You gotta love how  Stampin' Up! products coordinate beautifully.
• The Chocolate Chip card base (4 1/4" x 5 1/2", scored on the side) is topped by a 4" x 5 1/4" piece of Very Vanilla Textured card stock.
• The sentiment is also from the Very Versatile stamp set, Chocolate Chip ink on Very Vanilla (2 1/2" x 3/4").   
• To add a little pizzazz, I cropped a piece of Textured Chocolate Chip with a Large Oval Punch and adhered it to the end.  TIP:  Cut after adhering to the Vanilla card stock so it's a clean edge through both layers.
• I layered the sentiment on Sage Shadow card stock (2 3/4" x 1").
• The perfect touch is a Stampin' Up! Very Vanilla 5/16" Jumbo Brad.  TIP:  It's from the same assortment as the Chocolate Chip used above--Silver and Whisper White are also in the Neutrals Assortment).
• The sentiment is attached with two Stampin' Dimensionals for a little 3-D effect.

Modern Gray Flannel

Crisp and clean are the ingredients for any masculine card.  This bold birthday card is for my nephew, celebrating his 35th birthday.  Click here for more of my masculine samples.

"Celebrate" (from Stampin' Up!'s Celebrate Everything) is inked in Basic Gray and stamped on Whisper White.  A striking contrast occurs when it's mixed with Pumpkin Pie and Basic Gray.  And how about those jazzy Jumbo Brads?  Boing!

I got to use my Circle Scissor Plus to create the 4.25 Whisper White Circle.  It really makes the card come alive as a background accent.  Here's a link to helpful tips I posted previously about the Circle Scissor Plus. 

TIP:  For a perfect edge, attach the circle to your card and crop the entire side.  The Basic Gray patterned paper is from Stampin' Up!'s Hostess Level 1 Patterns Pack II.  The rich texture of the Basic Gray Textured card stock at the bottom makes a handsome finish.

ENVELOPE TIP:  Another Basic Gray pattern was layered over the flap of a Whisper White Medium Envelope. Be sure to glue the flap (not the paper) first and keep the adhesive close to the edges to avoid a gap.  Line the designer paper up with the envelope crease and adhere.  Simply flip the envelope over and snip away the excess.
