Papercrafts RAK Parade

 

Nope, the card (actually a just card front) above isn't mine.  Nor are the other cards below.  The seriously sweet gal on a pumpkin above was created by Kendra Richardson, as apart of a swap with my Southwest Stampers Stampin' Up! demonstrator group.  She made the following card, too.  Love how she used the 5-Petal Flower Punch!

I'm so lucky to get so many beautiful cards and inspiration . . . there's something about handmade cards that keeps us creating and touches our heart when we get one in return.

My Stampin' Pretty Pals and I enjoyed a card swap at the Stampin' Up! Convention in Salt Lake City last month.  Amazing artistic talent!  I'll be sharing plenty more.

We also included my Stampin' Up! Service Account Manager (also referred to as a "SAM"--think Mary Fish's "handler"), Maxine Conrad.  Her swap card is above, created with the Because I Care hostess stamps set. Absolutely exquisite.  I'm really diggin' the color combo.

Max is also a Stampin' Up! Demonstrator and her blog "Stamp to the Max" blog is delightful.  Max and I managed to take a little time out together at convention on the left.

Elements of Style RAK

Receiving a handmade card as a random act of kindness (RAK) always touches my heart.  This elegant card was given to me by my friend, Sandy.  She CASE'd (Copy And Share with Everyone) a card by Stampin' Up! Demonstrator Lianne Carper (who CASE'd Demo Tina Dyck, who found it on the internet somewhere . . . and so goes the story of how a cool card goes "viral.")  Here's Lianne's card and instructions on how to make your very own. 

The Elements of Style floral stamp (Wood Mount 118611, Clear Mount 120045) was stamped repeatedly to create a Toile background on Very Vanilla card stock.  It zoomed to "über-cool" when the stamped background was embossed with the Stampin' Up! Square Lattice Textured Impressions Embossing Folder (119976).

Ravishing RAK's

Random Acts of Kindness = RAK.  I cherish receiving a handcrafted gift or card.  I wanted to show off some ravishing creations I received from my fellow Southwest Stampers demonstrator group.  They attended an event at my home with Shelli Gardner (Stampin' Up! CEO and Co-Founder) that preceded my  Workshop of a Lifetime.  Isn't the little basket by Karen Reid (above) adorable . . . yes, those ovals represent the Prickly Pear Cactus currently blooming in Tucson.  Prickly Pear Jam was tucked inside--clever girl!  Shelli got one, too!

Kindness and Art

You wouldn't likely be reading my blog if you didn't believe in the special way it feels to give or receive a handcrafted card.   Combining kindness and art says more than an email ever will.  True? 

The card above was given to me by my niece, Kris Kilcoyne, of Kween Bee Kreations.  I ADORE how the butterfly works with the sentiment.

Karren's "Star" Revealed

You loved this star book (original post here) and asked how to create it.  The designer, my Guest Stamper Karren Reda, has indulged us with both photos and directions below.  Enjoy.  Thanks, Karren, for an amazing project and all the details!

Step 1 : Covers - cut 2 chip board squares 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches; 2 pattern paper 5 x 5 inches to cover the chip board; then 7 card stock 3 1/2 x 6 inches; 7 card stock 3 1/2 x 5 inches; and 7 card stock 3 1/2 x 4 inches (decorate with stamps).  Score or fold the 6 inch stock at 3 inches; score or fold the 5 inch stock at 2 1/2 inches and the 4 inch at 2 inches.

 

Step 2: I run the 5 inch square pattern paper through the Xyron and center the chip board in the square.  Cut the corners at a 45 degree angle and fold the edges.  Repeat with 2nd chip board square.

 

Step 3 :  This photo duplicates step 2 - just another angle.

Step 4:  Making foundation signatures - put double sided tape around the edges of one half of the folded card stock

 

Step 5:  Attach the taped side to one of the other folded card stocks of the same size.

Step 6:  Do this for all the 6 inch stock, keeping one end open (untaped).

Step 7:  Attaching the ribbon - fold the whole star book flat, temporarily tape approximately 14 inches of ribbon in place to hold - enough ribbon should extend beyond the card to be tied in a bow.

  Step 8: Cover the front layer with tacky glue

Step 9:  Place one of the chip board covers over the glue.  Place it so that it lines up with the back edge of the foundation signatures so the book can open all the way.  Repeat for back cover.

Step 10:  Close the book - rubber band while glue sets (usually about 30 minutes)

 

Step 11:  Open book into star shape with two covers (chip board) - tie the bow if it helps.  Add the second set of signatures all around, taping the outside edges (lighter blue).

Step 12:  Stamp the 3rd set of signatures, then add the same way the second set was added

Step 13:  Add embelishments

 

Step 14 :  Decorate the covers, especially if the book is to be displayed closed.

 

Steps 15 to end: embellishments from different angles.  Attach photos or other memorabilia as you like.

The Milk of Human Kindness

From Shakespeare's Macbeth, 1605:

"Yet doe I feare thy Nature, It is too full o' th' Milke of humane kindnesse."

As some of you have already learned, my beloved sister-in-law, Karol Harris, lost her battle with breast cancer last week.  You may recall our special "Think Pink" Pals Paper Arts theme last October--a tribute to both Karol's fight and so many who have been affected by this disease.

It's been a sad week, but seeing family and friends when we returned to Madison for the funeral was very healing.  Karol was the epitome of  the "milk of human kindness" . . . evidenced by the enormous turnout of family, friends and co-workers at her funeral service.  Her intelligence, wit and generosity are a model for all and will be greatly missed.  

Karol's daughter (my niece, Kris Kilcoyne, Kween Bee Kreations) and I have received an outpouring of condolences and kindness from fellow stampers. I'm so very grateful.  I wanted to share the beautiful handmade cards I have received.   It's times like this that we can all see how powerful our passion for stamping and paper crafting can be.

Stampin' Pretty RAK's

Is there anything more special than being the recipient of a Random Act of Kindness (RAK)?  The card above was given to me by Ginger Toivonen of my Stampin' Pretty Pals.  I love how the Petal Pizzazz  and Flight of the Butterfly (sentiment) stamps are combined.  It is a CASE from Jamie Sears at stampingmommyof4.com. 

The card below was a thank your from my fellow Tucson, AZ Stampin' Up! demonstrator, Ginny Tabor.  She says that this card is not her original idea but isn't 100% where she first saw it (maybe Splitcoaststampers).  If anyone knows whom I should credit, leave me a comment below.  I will update this post with the info!  Thank you, Ginny, for your beautiful execution.

UPDATE:  Here are tips and instructions from Ginny.  Also, thanks to reader Jeanna . . . who shared this excellent tutorial from Barbara Jean Smith (we think she's the original designer):

As far as tips on making the card, I've made it with 12 x 12 cardstock as well as 8 1/2 x 11.  I prefer to use the 12 x 12, as that way the card totally overlaps on each side, but it will look okay using the regular size, too.
When using 12x12, I cut it down to 5 1/2 x 12 - that way you can get two cards from each sheet.  I then score at 3 7/8 and at 8 1/8 on the long side.  I place the embossing folder so that the widest part of the flower is lined up against the scoring line or fold of the card, then flip the embossing folder (not the cardstock) so that the other "flap" is also lined up with the widest part of the embossed flower on the fold.   That way, one side is "embossed" and the other flap is "debossed".  I use my paper snips to cut around the flower on each flap, cut "up" on the score lines to the top of the card, then round the corners at the top.  You may want to trim each side of the card just a bit, so that the card lays flat and doesn't have excess bulk when folded.  This is probably as clear as mud, so feel free to e-mail me with questions, and I'll try to answer.

I love the monochromatic color scheme and texture from the Stampin' Up! Manhattan Flower Embossing Folder (114517).  What a "wow" card!

Manhattan Flower and RAK's

I absolutely adore texture.  Stampin' Up!'s Textured Impressions Folders produce defined and crisp texture when zipped through the Big Shot with card stock.  The Manhattan Flower Die (used above) is unique and beautiful.  I have seen so many gorgeous applications with it.  Click to see a previous sample I created  with the Manhatttan Flower using a stunning watercolor technique.
