The Rest of the Big Shot Gang

TIP:  When adhering these 3-D projects, use something stronger than Snail Adhesive if you want to avoid the dreaded "wardrobe failure."  Sticky Strip or anything that offers a good bond is fine.

TIP:  When you wrap ribbon, have the two ends meet underneath the tag so there are no seams.

BRIGHT IDEA:  To create the "thread" for the button, simply cut a very skinny strip of card stock (Pink Pirouette here), slip through and carefully tie.  You can flip it the other way (tie on the bottom) if you want a more polished look.  You'll always have perfectly coordinated "thread" colors on hand!

Baskets and Blooms and Boxes, Oh My!

No templates allowed!  This adorable basket, pillow box and scallop envelope were all created using the Big Shot and Bigz Dies, available to order on-line here, beginning September 2. Click here to download the Big Shot Brochure and pricing information.

Just a few easy turns of a handle and your done.  Not only is it a complete blast to produce these little babies, you could do party favors, gift cards, table settings and more incredibly quickly.  Did I mention it sets the score lines for clean folds, too?  My hero. The patterned paper for all these projects is from Stamin' Up!'s Parisian Summer.  Run with it.  It's trés cool!

I set up Big Shot 101 to help readers and customers sift through all the information (and misinformation) about the Big Shot and the release of Stampin' Up!'s exclusive dies. I am personally testing each product (I'm a "show me" kind of girl) for use and compatability.

Using Stampin' Up!'s Bigz XL Baskets and Blooms die (6" x 13 3/4" x 5/8" thick--longer than the Bigz Dies which are 5.5" x 6" x 5/8" thick)), I produced this charming basket (approximately 3.5 " high).  It pops out in two pieces with small folds that you adhere and are hidden in the seam.  You next pop out the circle base in the same or a contrasting color.  The tag is also part of the Baskets and Blooms die.  I'm thinking hostess gifts, bridal showers, holiday table settings. 

BRIGHT IDEA:  Make your own coordinated paper shreds.  I simply used scraps of Bravo Burgundy, ran it through my crimper for some texture and converted it to slivers with my nifty shredding scissors.  Bingo!

Big Shot and Stampin' Up!'s Exclusive Dies On Sale 9/2

The Big Shot and Stampin' Up!'s exclusive new dies will be available for purchase (order on-line here) on September 2.  However, I'm feeling overwhelmed with the amount of information (and misinformation) about the Big Shot, the new dies and compatability with other die cutting machines.

So, I put together "Big Shot 101," which addresses FAQ's regarding the Big Shot Die-Cut Machine and Stampin' Up!'s Sizzlits, Bigz and Bigz XL Dies.  Except as noted, the information below represents my "independent research" (and piles of card stock experiments over the last few days) on how to use this little work horse and the new dies.  Coming Up! Using the Baskets & Blooms Bigz XL Die.

I have set this page up as a permanent link in my right side bar (under "Links I Love") and will update this information as I continue to learn and experiment with more related products.  Please check back for new ideas and tips.  In addition, I have included my personal recommendations for using the new dies successfully in the Cuttlebug.

TIP:  Results and tension may vary a bit from machine to machine.  Typically, simple adjustments by adding or removing a piece of card stock or two (acting as shims), will help create the right amount of pressure for your machine.  You should feel some resistance and hear a few clicks as your roll your sandwich through.  However, never force a sandwich through any machine.  You risk breaking the machine, dies and plates.

Big Shot

Bigz Dies (for example, Scallop Envelope, Top Note (featured), Pillow Box):

Sandwich (starting from the bottom)

• Acrylic Cutting Pad (Big Shot)

TIP:  If you have any issues with the die cutting through part of the score lines, the Premium Crease Pad ($113476, $8.95) is an excellent solution.

Sandwich (starting from the bottom)

Sandwich (starting from the bottom)

 Nestabilities:  These are a little trickier since you want to get the pressure just right to avoid any embossing on card stock you only want to cut. 

To Cut (starting from the bottom): 

• Multipurpose Platform opened to Tab 1
• 2 pieces thin card board and 1 piece card stock. TIP:  This is where you can adjust a bit (more or less card stock, for example) for perfect pressure.
• Acrylic Cutting Pad (Big Shot)
• Card Stock or Designer Series Paper
• Die face down
• Acrylic Cutting Pad (Big Shot)   

TIP:  I flip the traditional order of the card stock and the die (face down vs. face up) so that you can stamp an image first and still align and see it when you cut.  This avoids the extra step of a magnetic sheet or tape.

To Emboss (starting from the bottom)

• Multipurpose Platform opened to Tab 1
• Acrylic Cutting Pad (Big Shot)
• Die face up with card stock still in it from cutting steps above
• Tan polymer mat (same as used with the Cuttlebug)
• 1 piece thin card board   TIP:  This is where you can adjust a bit (more or less card stock, for example) for perfect pressure.
• Acrylic Cutting Pad (Big Shot)

Cuttlebug

Bigz Dies (for example, Scallop Envelope, Top Note, Pillow Box)

• Cuttlebug B Plate

TIP:  Score lines do not cut through (a good thing) but are not quite as defined as using the Big Shot (per above) with the Crease Pad.

Stampin' Up! Faux Embossing

Want a simple way to create the "wow" appeal of dry embossing in a fraction of the time?  This week's Splitcoast Technique Challenge (TLC183) offers the simple basics to achieve this look.  I also incorporated Splitcoast Sketch Challenge (SC191) and Color Challenge (CC181: Kraft, Basic Black, Rose Red) into this card.  TIP:  All Daily Splitcoast Challenges are listed on my right side bar for your convenience.

The Kindred Spirits stamp was inked in Whisper White Craft ink and stamped on Kraft card stock.  TIP:  I used a heat gun to speed the drying process of the craft ink

Gather a Stamp-a-ma-jig, imaging sheet and Sahara Sand Ink for the overlay.  TIP:  Note how the imaging sheet fits into the corner of the Stamp-a-ma-jig.

The same stamp (it's a two sided stamp . . . don't be confused :) was cleaned and reinked in Sahara Sand.  I snugly fitted the imaging sheet into the corner of the Stamp-a-ma-jig and slid (again fitted against the Stamp-a-ma-jig corner) the inked overlay image onto the imaging sheet.

The stamped imaging sheet is positioned on top of the Whisper White image, slightly off of lining up.  TIP:  This is a critical step in creating the shading that mimics embossing.

Carefully remove the imaging sheet making sure not to move the Stamp-a-ma-jig.  Ink the stamp again in Sahara Sand and use the corner of the Stamp-a-ma-jig to stamp the overlay.

Here's the end result!

I cropped and embossed the image using Nestabilities Rectangles and my Big Shot Die Cutting Machine (on sale 9/2).  Using the Stamp-a-ma-jig one more time, the sentiment was layered onto the image.  The Basic Black scalloped mat also was created using Nestabilities Rectangles.  The charm of Black Gingham Ribbon provides a soft balance.

The background panels are Rose Red and Whisper White card stock.  Both receive some dazzling  texture using a Big Shot and Birds and Swirls cuttlebug embossing folder (yes, they work in the Big Shot).  They are layered on Basic Black and a 4.25 x 5.5 card base of Kraft card stock.

The final touch is a row of Rose Red Brads (Rich Regals), lined up obediently using a Paper Piercer and Template.

For Whom the Bella Toiles

Yes, I'm a literature geek (BA, English, won't say the year :) and find humor in that title (think Ernest Hemingway).  I simply couldn't resist.  However, I'm just as passionate about stamping and am finding plenty of uses for the Bella Toile background stamp, including my last post.

Also, topping my list of things I adore, is Stampin' Up!'s exclusive Top Note die.  After stamping Cameo Coral card stock with the Bella Toile background (Riding Hood Red Ink), I zipped it through my Big Shot with the Top Note die for this delightful design.   TIP:  Look closely at the details of the tiny dashed border . . . all minature cuts made by the die. 

Both the Big Shot Die Cutting Machine and Stampin' Up!'s exclusive dies(and more) will be available to order on-line here beginning September 2.  Check out these candy bag toppers I created with the same Top Note die.  I just love versatility!

The flowers are from Stampin' Up!'s Pretties Kit, dyed to matching using a Riding Hood Red Ink Refill (just a few drops in a bit of water) and a So Saffron Marker.  TIP:  I prefer the markers for speed and less mess--but since there aren't Stampin' Up! markers for the In colors, I used the reinker for the red flower.

The sentiment (Fundamental Phrases) was stamped with Riding Hood Red and popped out using a Small Oval Punch.  TIP:  Experiment with stamping on colors other than Vanilla and White (note red on cameo with the Top Note above) . . . the combinations are endless.  I adhered it with Stampin' Dimensionals for a snug fit and placed a Hodgepodge Styled Silver Label Holder on top.  Two Pretties clear rhinestone brads deck the sides. 

The flowers are assembled using a Pretties clear rhinestone brad and one of the new Filigree Designer Brads.  Cutie.  The 5.5 x 4.25 base of Riding Hood Red Textured card stock provides a rich backdrop to the bling!

Amazing Organic Grace

Let's face it.  The hostess sets in Stampin' Up!'s Fall/Winter Idea Book and Catalog are fantastic.  There isn't a single set I wouldn't mind owning (and I'm working on making a sweep :)  Especially refreshing are the Level 1 options, the easiest to achieve and easy on the eyes.  The entire catalog is available for download on my right side bar . . . simply click on the cover with a butterfly.   If you prefer the "real" thing, click here to order a copy via priority mail.

Today's post features the fern stamp from Organic Grace (Hostess Level 1).  My "inkspiration" for this card was from Splitcoast Featured Stamper Kokirose (Splitcoast Challenge FS81) and her lovely design.  To begin, I stamped the fern twice in Old Olive Ink on Very Vanilla card stock.  The second fern was snipped out and layered over the first.  The corners were cropped with a Ticket Corner Punch as were the attached mats of Sage Shadow and Old Olive.

The 3.5 x 3.5" square panel of Sage Shadow card stock was given a gorgeous design using the new Bella Toile Background.  TIP:  Sage Shadow ink on the matching card stock offers a soft tone on tone appeal.  The corners are pierced and layers of Old Olive and Very Vanilla card stock follow.

The Sage Shadow textured card base is 5.5 x 4.25", scored at the top.  TIP:  For a classy touch, I  snipped the bottom corners (front and back) with a Corner Rounder Punch.  It's topped with Stampin' Up!'s Windsor Knot Designer Paper (splendid small patterns for layering), also rounded on the bottom.

The final accents include the newly released Sage Shadow 1/4" Grosgrain Ribbon and the "thanks so much" sentiment from Pocket Silhouettes.  I shaped up the sentiment using the small oval punch. A 1 x 1" square of Old Olive peeks from behind the Hodgepodge Hardware Styled Silver Label Holder and Brads.  TIP:  For a snug fit below label holders, I pumped up the olive card stock using Stampin' Dimensionals.  The sentiment was adhered with dimensionals.

Hip Umbrella Blooms

I got off the starting blocks early on today's Splitcoast Stampers Inspiration Challenge (IC142). I fell in love with the patterns of the hip Marimekko umbrellas and jumped right in. 

Here's the umbrella that inspired today's design.

Stampin' Up!'s exclusive Sizzlet die four pack, Birds and Blooms, gets the limelight again today.  They (and the Big Shot) will be available to purchase right here beginning September 2.  I used my Big Shot Die Cutting Machine to pop out these sweet Regal Rose card stock flowers.  TIP:  If you already own a Cuttlebug or other die cutting machine, you will get the same wonderful results with these dies. 

TIP:  What's really cool about these particular flower dies?  You can pop the centers out (they're perforated) or make a circle template, lay it over the flower and stamp just the center . . . the really, really cool news is that the center of the large flower coordinates with the 1" Circle Punch and the smaller center coordinates with the 1/2" Circle Punch. Perfect for the creation of a template or punched layers, as I chose.

Using Stampin' Dimensionals, I added some 3-D to my flowers along with 1" and 1/2" circles of a black striped designer pattern (from Ghostly Greetings Designer Series, gasp . . . it's not even a Halloween card). 

They are adhered to a layer of Whisper White card stock that I stamped with the Wonderful You stem rather randomly (just the stamp when inspired by this umbrella).  I layered the stem panel on Regal Rose card stock and a 4.25 x 5.5 card base of Whisper White, topped with more Ghostly Greetings stripe paper.

Stampin' Up! makes the most delightful 5/8" Grosgrain Ribbon (Regal Rose) which pulls the card together.  The sentiment is from Full of Life (matted on Regal Rose) and three Rich Regals Brads.  TIP:  I use a paper piercer and template (Stampin' Up! Crafter's Tool Kit) to set holes before adding the brads.  The brads are "technically" Rose Red.  TIP:  So far lightning hasn't struck me down for not using a perfectly matched brad.  It's OK.  You don't really have to match.  Colors within the same color family love each other.  For those of you who embrace the "matchy, match" philosphy, please"breathe in, breathe out."  Repeat.

Urban Garden Thanks

This little 4.25 square card was inspired by this week's Splitcoast Sketch Challenge (SC190--all challenges are listed on my right side bar) and the sentiment is the only stamp I used!

The flower center features a Basic Gray and Kiwi Kiss blossom, each snipped from Stampin' Up!'s new Urban Garden Designer Series Paper.  They are adhered with Stampin' Dimensionals for some 3-D layering and land on a Basic Gray Circle and Kiwi Kiss Scallop Circle, both having been shaped with nestabilities circles and my Big Shot.  THE PERFECT TOUCH:  Tiny dotted accents created with a White Signo Gel Pen bring the background layers to life.

The 4.25 square base is Basic Gray textured card stock.  A coordinating Urban Garden designer paper dresses up the lower left corner and counters with the same pattern in the Photo Corners Punch on the top right.  The small photo corner is attached to a large Kiwi Kiss photo corner with Stampin' Dimensionals.

The diagonal banner consists of Kiwi Kiss textured card stock with a layer of Basic Gray textured card stock on top.  TIP:  I adhered these layers as rectangular strips across the card, one at a time, and flipped the card over to cut away the excess with my hobby knife--creating the "fitted" banner.

The sentiment is from Stampin' Up!'s new Thank You Kindly set (p.142 of the Fall/Winter Idea Book and Catalog).  TIP:  The four beautiful, versatile thank you stamps are priced right at $13.95.  I love stamp sets that give a hefty bang for the buck!  The card's sentiment was aligned in just the right spot using my Stamp-a-ma-jig (tutorial here).  It's so nice to be able to see the image in different positions until the right one jumps out at you.

IMPORTANT:  The question I am asked the most about the Big Shot and the new dies is about compatibility.  Stampin' Up! claims that the new dies will work in most die cutting machines and, conversely, the Big Shot can accommodate most dies using its multi-purpose platform (included).  However, plan on the need to play a bit with the "sandwich" order if you have alternative equipment until you get the right amount of pressure.   TIP:  I had total success using the Scallop Envelope and Top Note Bigz Dies with my Cuttlebug.  The perfect sandwich starting from the bottom:  Cuttlebug B Plate, Bigz Die face up, card stock, B Plate.

On-Line Order Problem

Stampin' Up!-Sy Daisy

Some more ideas to share from Stampin' Up!'s Fall/Winter Idea Book and Catalog (download available on my right side bar) . . . Today Upsy Daisy (now 15% off) takes the stage along with some color and design inspiration from Beate's "Be Inspired" Challenge #19.

I dipped the delightful daisy silhouette stamp in Chocolate Chip and stamped on Whisper White card stock.  It's cropped and embossed using my Big Shot and oval nestabilities and layered on a scalloped oval of Tangerine Tango.

The left side panel is a layer of the new Haiku Designer Series Paper over Tangerine Tango and the background panel is Chocolate Chip Textured Card Stock.  TIP:  Using a Paper Piercer and Template, I added dotty details.  A wisp of Chocolate Chip Taffeta Ribbon provides some punch.  The So Saffron card base is 5.5 x 4.25, scored at the top.

The Chocolate Chip sentiment is from Pocket Silhouettes (now 15% off).  It's popped out with a Word Window Punch and layered over punches of the Large Oval (So Saffron) and a Tangerine Tango Designer Label.  TIP:  Get even more mileage out of your punches by layering them for different looks.

Parisian Dreams Gate Fold Card

You're going to see plenty more of this new Designer Series Paper.  Parisian Summer is one of my favorites.  The colors in the pack are ooo la la . . . So Saffron, Bravo Burgundy, Sahara Sand and Pink Pirouette.  My stamping diva niece, Kris, at Kween Bee Kreations, created this helpful download of Stampin' Up!'s current Designer Series Paper and their coordinating colors.  Thanks, Kris.  I have added it to my list of "Links I Love" on my right side bar.

Gate cards are incredibly easy and this one opens up to a Stampin' Up! gift certificate from me.  I began with a 4.25 x 8.5" piece of So Saffron Textured card stock.  It's scored and folded at 2 1/8" and 6 3/8".

I next cut this yummy Parisian Designer Series paper into two 1 7/8" x 4" panels.  TIP:  Before they were adhered to the So Saffron base, I added some extra card stock behind them to add a little heft and help bury the So Saffron Brads I used to accent the corners.  It felt too "bumpy" without the card stock backing (kind of like the "Princess and the Pea" . . . I could feel them and would lose sleep over it . . . hah!).  TIP:  The brads were aligned using my Paper Piercer and Template.

I stamped the Dreams du Jour stamp in Bravo Burgundy on Very Vanilla card stock and used So Saffron and Mellow Moss Stampin' Up! markers to add color.  I stamped and colored the image again, snipping out the largest flower.  It was popped up on a dimensional.  Some delightful stick-on pearls add some glamour.

The image was die cut and embossed using nestabilities ovals and my Big Shot die cutting machine.  It's matted on Bravo Burgundy card stock, also shaped using the scalloped oval from nestabilities set.  Using a horizontal slot punch, the oval image became a ribbon slide.  It's attached on the left hand side but the ribbon and knot on the right hold the "gate" closed.  The recipient will untie the knot to reveal the sentiment, note, or in this case a gift certificate inside.

Stampin' Up! Masculine Silhouettes

I'm so pleased with the wonderful variety of stamp sets in the new Stampin' Up! Fall/Winter 2008 Idea Book and Catalog (download available on my right side bar).  However, I have a penchant for both silhouette stamps and sales (15% off 10 stamp sets) . . . so Pocket Silhouettes and Upsy Daisy both made my "must-have" list.

This card is for my nephew who is turning thirty something (I lost count once he reached 18).  He's definitely not a ribbon or felt flower kind of guy.  TIP: To create a masculine card, keep it simple.  Neutral colors are a sure thing (not that you can't use color but there's a little more guesswork).  I chose to work with Kraft, Chocolate Chip and Basic Black. 

The card base (4.25 x 5.5) is Kraft card stock and the banner is Basic Black with a layer of Chocolate Chip on top.  To add texture to the Chocolate Chip, it took a ride through my Big Shot.  TIP:  Here's the "magic" sandwich for using a Cuttlebug embossing folder in the Big Shot.  The base is the Big Shot Multi-Purpose Platform, set to Tab 1.  Next is the Cuttlebug embossing folder (in this case Tiny Mosaic) with the card stock inside of it.  Two acrylic mats top things off.  Crank-a-roo!   It worked beautifully.

I stamped the Pocket Silhouettes (now 15% off) stamp (Basic Black ink) on Kraft card stock.  It's cut and embossed using Nestabilities rectangles (and the Big Shot). Chocolate Chip and a long piece of Basic Black card stock provide the background. 

The sentiment is from Upsy Daisy (also 15% off).  It was dipped in Basic Black, stamped on Kraft and popped out with a Key Tag Punch.  The final touch was the "heavy metal" look of Jumbo Eyelets in Pewter.

Scallop Envelope Details

As I promised, here are the details from my previous post for the charming mini envelopes I cranked out of my Big Shot Die Cutting Machine using Stampin' Up!'s exclusive Scallop Envelope Die.  Don't miss my Big Shot Envelope Tutorial.  All three envelopes use the new Urban Garden Designer Series Paper.  Luscious.

 LITTLE BIRD:  The bird was given "life" (and wings) using Birds and Blooms, the new exclusive Sizzlit die (3 other dies in the pack of four) from Stampin' Up!  It's smaller and thinner than the Bigz envelope die.  The "sandwich" of spacers changes, too . . . but the multi-purpose platform that comes with the Big Shot makes most dies (other machines, too) universal.  I ran the bird die through twice to create the second color for the wings.  TIP:  I used Stampin' Dimensionals behind the sentiment so it would fit snugly in the label holder.

Big Shot Envelope Envy

I'm convinced.  The Big Shot ($99.95) is cutting edge literally and figuratively.  These adorable mini envelopes were created with the Scallop Envelope Bigz Die ($21.95), created exclusively for Stampin' Up!  They're perfect for gift giving and accommodate 2 x 3 cards beautifully.  TIP:  Dies from other manufacturers (including Cuttlebug embossing folders) are compatible with the Big Shot and the new Stampin' Up!dies are compatible with other die cutting systems (Cuttlebug included). The Big Shot and accessories will be available through Stampin' Up! beginning September 2.

TIP:  One of my readers recently advised me that current etiquette suggests that a smaller card (dolled up in a mini envelope) is more acceptable for gift giving than a large card.  The Big Shot makes playing by the rules fashionable, fast and fun.  At less than 2 minutes each to assemble (before embellishing), these mini envies easily beat the 10 minute or less requirement for my Stamping 911 category.

So let's learn how to make these little pretties:

Here's the Big Shot.  It's sturdy, steady and easy to use. You use a series of plates and spacers to get the right pressure for die cutting and embossing.

This is the Scallop Envelope Bigz Die designed and only offered through Stampin' Up!

To create the "sandwich" for cutting the envelopes, you start with one of the acrylic plates (2 are included with the machine) for the base.  Building from base to top, you next add the scallop envelope die face up, card stock and finish with the second acrylic plate on top.

Turn the handle on the Big Shot to guide the sandwich through and create cutting pressure.

Check out this quick and precise result.  It even creates score lines!

Fold in the scored sides firstand adhere the bottom flap.  Notice the adorable detailing on the scallops.

Pacific Point Party

Hooray!  My Stampin' Up! order arrived yesterday with my latest fall/winter goodies and it's definitely time to "party hearty."  Although I enjoy the process, I have been busy reorganizing (and coveting) my new designer series paper, inks, stamps and embellishments.  Of course, I had to experiment with my new Big Shot die cutting machine, too.  As you'll see, it partnered beautifully with my beloved nestabilities. 

Since I like things "just so" in my stamping zone, I had little time for much creating in the last 24 hours.  Fortunately, all the new stamps are die cut so that aspect was a snap.  Our Creative Corner (OCC) had a challenge this week to create a project using NO designer paper and a maximum of FOUR layers.  I thought I could play by the "rules" and whip up a monochromatic set of cards showcasing the versatility of the "Party Hearty" set and prove to myself first hand that the Big Shot was nestabilities "friendly."

All three cards start with a 4.25 x 4.25 Whisper White card base.  The only color comes with a big pow--Pacific Point card stock and ink.  I love how crisp it looks against Whisper White.  TIP:  A Stamp-a-ma-jig (tutorial here) helped me position sentiments on each card and the hat stamp.

The party hat card incorporates the adorable hat stamp (all five hats on one stamp).  TIP:  You could easily color each hat a different color using markers or even color the triangle area a different color than the decorative top.  TIP:  Or stamp the image twice, cut out the triangles of the five hats from the second image and pop them up on dimensionals over the first image for some 3-D. 

The sentiment is from All Holidays.  I used the Big Shot with nestabilities rectangles to add embossing, mirroring the look and feel of fancy stationery.  The sumptuous new Pacific Point Double Striped Ribbon was a snazzy accent.

For the "party hearty" card, I stamped the present 6 times on Whisper White (Pacific Point ink) and punched them out with a 3/4" Circle Punch.  TIP:  Stampin' Dimensionals below each circle give this simple card an instant lift (excuse the pun).  I again used the Big Shot and rectangular nestabilities to add the rich embossing.  The sentiment and some silver micro brads (www.justbrads.com) contribute plenty of pizzazz for this card.

Finally, my cupcake guy.   I stamped the cupcake on Whisper White and snipped it out.  I next cut and embossed a circle of Whisper White card stock and a scalloped circle of Pacific Point, both fashioned with circle nestabilities.  Using a Stamp-a-ma-jig, I positioned the candles to pop up behind the cupcake and then layered the cupcake on top with Stampin' Dimensionals. 

Silver beads made delightful sprinkles.  TIP:  I have good luck adding these little cuties by dabbing a tiny amount of glue where I want the bead, and then sliding the bead off a needle (to keep it positioned upright) onto the glue--holding it for just a few seconds for it to adhere.  Using a Paper Piercer and Template, I jazzed up the corners then finished up using a Stamp-a-ma-jig to align the delicious "take the cake" sentiment.
